Born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Dolly Parton was destined to be a star. At just 12 years old, Dolly was appearing on Knoxville TV. Shortly after graduating High School in 1964, Dolly moved to Nashville, Tennessee to launch her singing career. Two years later she married Carl Dean, a man who ran an asphalt-paving business. When she caught the attention of The Porter Wagoner Show, she was hired to appear on the program and sing duets with Wagoner. Dolly toured with his group at the Grand Ole Opry, sold countless records, and eventually became so famous that it made sense for her to break out as a solo artist in 1974. Her first hit Joshua reached #1 in 1970 and helped her gain even more popularity. Winning five Country Music Association awards between 1968 and 1976, it became clear that Dolly was doing exactly what she was supposed to. Her vivacious personality and great talent landed her television show Dolly in 1976. Earning her first Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her song “Here You Come Again” set the ball rolling for success. In 1986, Dolly founded Dollywood, a theme park that highlights her life in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. She is also the head of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media company. Dolly also created the Dolly Parton Imagination Library where she has dedicated her time by gifting books to children around the world.
